About World Teachers’ Day

Held on 5 October and convened by UNESCO, marking the 1966 adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers — the first international standard setting out teachers’ rights and responsibilities.

A number of countries keep their own separate national teachers’ day on a different date, so a local celebration may not fall on 5 October.

Why this date does not move

The event countdown is live, and the date shown with it is the next occurrence. This is a fixed date: it falls on the same day of the month every year, so only the weekday changes.

The date follows a fixed calendar rule, so it can be computed years ahead. Where a country observes this as a public holiday, the official government calendar remains the authority for whether the day off is moved when it falls on a weekend.
