Breathing Timer

Use the shape as a pacing cue

The visual guide expands, pauses and contracts so you do not have to keep a count in your head. Follow it only at a pace that feels comfortable; the pattern is a pacing aid, not a test of how slowly you can breathe.

Keep the breath easy rather than deliberately taking very large breaths. If you feel lightheaded, tingling, short of breath or otherwise uncomfortable, return to normal breathing and stop the exercise.

Comfort comes before the count

A longer exhale or a brief pause can feel settling for some people, but there is no need to force a particular ratio. Choose an even pattern, box breathing or another preset only if it remains smooth and comfortable.

This timer is for general relaxation and practice. It is not a breathing treatment and should not replace advice from a qualified clinician for respiratory, cardiovascular, panic or other health concerns.

Questions people ask

Should I feel lightheaded doing this?

No โ€” if you do, shorten the counts or stop rather than pushing through. A pattern that leaves you lightheaded isn’t working as intended regardless of what it’s supposed to do.

How is this different from box breathing or 4-7-8?

This page is a general paced-breathing guide. Box breathing uses four equal phases, while 4-7-8 uses a longer hold and exhale. Choose whichever pattern remains smooth and comfortable.
