Why the exact time shifts a little every day
The sun doesn’t set at the same clock time from one day to the next. The amount of change depends on latitude, season, longitude within the time zone and daylight-saving rules, so nearby dates can move slowly in one place and much faster in another.
Sunrise and sunset are both formally defined as the moment the sun’s upper edge meets the horizon, with a small correction built in for the way the atmosphere itself bends light — which is exactly why the sun appears to arrive slightly before it’s geometrically actually there.
Twilight is the genuinely useful part on either side of that moment. Civil twilight, shown on every city page, is the window when there’s still enough natural light to comfortably work outdoors without needing artificial lighting.

Why does my sunset time differ slightly from another source I checked?
Elevation, the local horizon, and the exact coordinates used for a city all move the figure by a small amount. Anything within a couple of minutes counts as agreement, not an error.
How exactly are sunrise and sunset formally defined?
As the precise moment the sun’s upper edge meets the horizon, with a small built-in correction for the way the atmosphere bends light — which is why the sun visibly appears slightly before it’s geometrically actually there.
What is civil twilight, specifically?
The window either side of the sun’s position when it sits up to six degrees below the horizon, where there’s still enough natural light to comfortably work outdoors without artificial lighting.
What’s the actual difference between nautical and astronomical twilight?
Twelve and eighteen degrees below the horizon respectively. At nautical twilight the sea horizon is still visible; once astronomical twilight ends, the sky is genuinely fully dark.
What actually happens above the Arctic Circle for part of the year?
For a portion of the year the sun simply neither rises nor sets at all. City pages at those latitudes state that plainly rather than printing a time that doesn’t actually exist.
Why do two cities inside one time zone see sunrise at noticeably different times?
Because sunrise depends on longitude and latitude, not on which time zone a place happens to keep — a city several hundred kilometres further west sees the sun rise later, even on an identical offset.
