Why the boundaries zigzag instead of running straight
Time zone borders are political rather than geometric — they follow national frontiers, provincial lines, and occasionally a river or mountain range, which is exactly why the bands on any accurate map bend and zigzag instead of tracking neatly down the meridians.
The extremes tell the more interesting stories. UTC+14 exists in Kiribati because the country moved the date line eastward in 1995 specifically so its whole territory would share one calendar day. China’s single nationwide zone stretches an offset suited to its coast across four thousand kilometres of interior. Spain sits geographically west of Greenwich but keeps Central European time — a wartime decision from the 1940s that was simply never reversed.
