What Father’s Day is

Kept on the third Sunday in June in the United States, the UK, Canada, India and much of the world, though many countries choose their own date — Germany on Ascension Day, Italy and Spain on St Joseph’s Day in March.

The American holiday was first proposed in 1909 and took until 1972 to become permanent.
