What Earth Day is

First held in the United States in 1970 and credited with driving the environmental legislation that followed. It is now coordinated in around 190 countries.

The date was chosen to fall between American university terms, to maximise student participation.

Why this date does not move

The date follows a fixed calendar rule, so it can be computed years ahead. Where a country observes this as a public holiday, the official government calendar remains the authority for whether the day off is moved when it falls on a weekend.
