What Diwali is

The festival of lights, kept across Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism and by Newar Buddhists, marking the victory of light over darkness. The main night falls on the new moon of Kartika.

It runs over five days, with Dhanteras before and Bhai Dooj after, and is a public holiday in India, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Fiji and Trinidad.
